The University of Lisbon College on Polar and Extreme Environments (Polar2E) was launched in the 6 March 2020 with the participation of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Prof. Manuel Heitor, and the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Prof. António da Cruz Serra. Polar2E joins three schools of ULISBOA, the Faculty of Sciences, the Higher Technical Institute and the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning. It includes 8 research centres and its an inititiative of ULISBOA to foster interdisciplinary research and advanced education. The Director of Polar2E is Gonçalo Vieira from CEG/IGOT and Zephyrus P&M, with Ricardo Trigo (FCUL/IDL) and Zita Martines (CQE/IST) as Sub-Directors. This new framework, where Zephyrus P&M is integrated, which developed after a University wide call for interdisciplinary colleges, is a very significant achievement of the Polar and extreme environments research groups of the University of Lisbon and will allow for a strong consolidation of research, extending it also to other schools of ULisboa.
