STUDENTS
Alexandre Nieuwendam | [email protected] | PhD Student
PhD student in Physical Geography at the IGOT, working on the analysis of relict slope deposits in Serra da Estrela Mountain, Portugal. Has a MS in Physical Geography at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon focused on the thermal regime of the active layer and permafrost in the Hurd Peninsula (Livingston Island, Antarctica). He is also a researcher of the Centre of Geographical Studies. His research interests focus on geomorphodynamics of polar and mountain environments. He participated in five Antarctic campaigns between 2006 and 2012 with the Bulgarian, Brazilian and North-American Antarctic Expeditions and two in the Artic region, one in Adventdalen and Sassendalen, Svalbard and one in Abisko. Alexandre is former President of the Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN) and a member of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS).
André Texugo Lopes | PhD Student
PhD student in Archaeology at the University of Lisbon. He is doing is research on applicating ultra-high resolution remote sensing with UAVs to archaeological prospection, with a focus on the fortifications of the 3rd millennium in Estremadura, Portugal.
Carmen Soncco | carmenjulia@campus.ul.pt | Masters Student
Master student in geographic information systems and territorial modelling applied to planning at IGOT, working on monitoring methodologies and management strategies for Geosites in the Estrela Geopark, Portugal. Her research interests focus on studies of high resolution mapping technologies, mountain geomorphological dynamics, geoconservation strategies and sustainable development.
Daniel Pinheiro | Masters Student
Environmental Engineering Masters student at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), currently developing his master thesis in a partnership between Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território (IGOT), IST and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) under the supervision of Gonçalo Vieira, Dustin Whalen and João Canário regarding the exposure of lowland permafrost coastal areas to flooding and coastal erosion in the arctic hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk (Northwest Territories, Canada). His interests are: Remote Sensing, GIS, Environmental Modelling and Urban Planning
Joana Baptista | [email protected] | Masters Student
Graduated in Geography and Regional Planning (FCSH-UNL), Joana is a master’s candidate in Physical Geography and Territorial Planning (IGOT-UL) with a thesis on the study of the soil thermal regime in the Barton Peninsula, King George Island (Antarctica). With a admiration for natural landscapes, especially mountain landscapes, Joana developed an interest in cold and isolated environments, and by studying the physical processes associated with permafrost and climate change.
I collaborate in the PERMANTAR project, with the support of drilling and installation of thermal sensors for the monitoring of permafrost in the Barton Peninsula, King George Island.
Juan Javier Jímenez | PhD Student
Juan Javier Jímenez is PhD student in the Space Research and Astrobiology Program of the University of Alcalá (Spain), with a thesis on "Snow cover effects on frozen ground thermal regime in Deception Island (Maritime Antarctica), integrating observational and microwave remote sensing data".
Marcelo Fernandes | [email protected] | PhD Student
Marcelo has carried out research activities focused on Quaternary environmental changes driven by climate variability in alpine environments, namely in the Pyrenees. His MSc thesis focused on the glacial and post-glacial environmental evolution in the Upper Garonne valley (Central Pyrenees) using geomorphological evidence and sedimentary records. Moreover, he also reconstructed the extent and volume of paleoglaciers for each glacial phase since the Last Glaciation. More recently, he has worked on the reconstruction of permafrost conditions based on the distribution of geomorphological features in the Central Pyrenees. His research aims at establishing the chronological framework of glacial and periglacial processes in the Upper Garonne valley using absolute dating techniques.
