The THAWPOND project team (PI Carla Mora) has successfuly completed the field work in Umiujaq (Nunavik, Canada). The project aims at studying the biogeochemical significance of permafrost thaw pond colour and to evaluate their spatial representativity by using multiscale remote sensing. The summer 2019 field campaign aimed at surveying ponds at the BGR and Taspiapik field sites using multispectral UAV surveys, characterizing pond water physico-chemical properties and sampling pond water for phytoplancton analysis. The field team composed by Carla Mora, Gonçalo Vieira and Pedro Freitas stayed at the Centre d'Études Nordiques Research Station at Umiujaq. This research is funded by the FCT under the project THAWPOND (Portuguese Polar Program), by the FCT/Centro de Estudos Geográficos under grant UID/GEO/00295/2019, and by ArcticNet (NCE), Sentinel North (CFREF) and CEN at Université Laval.
