The application of the Estrela Territory to become a Global UNESCO Geopark has been endorsed after unanimous vote by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council in its 4th session, taking place in Rinjani-Lombok UNESCO Global Geopark in Indonesia, from 31 August to 2 September 2019. The Estrela Geopark should be endorsed by the UNESCO Executive Board in its next meeting in spring 2020, becoming formally a UNESCO Global Geopark.
The application has been organized by the Associação Geopark Estrela, which involves the municipalities of Belmonte, Celorico da Beira, Covilhã, Fornos de Algodres, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas, Oliveira do Hospital e Seia, as well as the Guarda Polytechincal Institute and the University of Beira Interior. Gonçalo Vieira of CEG/IGOT is the Scientific Coordinator of the Estrela Geopark, having lead the application dossier, while the Estrela Geopark also includes Carla Mora, as a member of the Scientific Committee and Coordinator of the Climate and environmental change team.
Zephyrus P&M has a long tradition of research in the Serra da Estrela. Currently, one PhD student (Alexandre Nieuwendam) and one Masters student (Carmen Soncco) are conducting their research in the Estrela mountains.
